Prefabricated Buildings: To Solve Industry Fragmentation for Achieving Industrialization

Translated By CIHIE Committee

In recent years, supported by multiple favorable policies, the prefabricated buildings have developed rapidly and attracted increasing attention from the industry. However, the difficulties that appeared in the development process also confuse many insiders.

Wen Linfeng, director of the Housing and Urban-Rural Development Ministry of Housing Industrialization Promotion Center (STC) believes that prefabricated buildings are set to be a long-term systematic project. Although facing many difficulties, the prefabricated building is an inevitable choice for the construction industry. Only by solving the fragmentation in production, construction and management, industrialization can truly be achieved.

Imminent Systematic Change in Construction Methods
In 2016, the General Office of the State Council issued relevant documents. The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural and 31 provinces and cities across the country have provided strong support for prefabricated buildings at the policy level, pushing the industry to flourish nationwide.

“The development of prefabricated buildings is important for promoting structural reforms on the supply side and the development of new urbanization. It is conducive to saving resources and energy, reducing construction pollution, improving productivity and construction quality.” Wen said.

Rebuilding the Construction Industry by Industrialization
Judging from the development situation, China's prefabricated buildings have shown a booming trend. Both the speed or scale is not the same as before. However, there are still many misunderstandings.

“The first misunderstanding is to blindly equate prefabricated buildings with prefabs  in the 1970s and 1980s. The second misunderstanding is that the technical system of the fabricated buildings is not safe enough. In fact, the technology has been optimized. Coupled with the training of related workers and continuous improvement of the regulatory mechanism, the safety and quality problems have been solved.” Wen said.

Meanwhile, he expressed that the industrialization, systemization, and standardization concept of the entire construction industry remains to be established. The industry links such as design, production, construction, procurement are all completely separated, which is not conducive to industrial construction.

A Platform to Promote Industry Communication
To push the industry communication and connect all aspects of the industry , the 2020 Global Prefabricated Building Development Summit will be held on May 11-12. Being concurrent with the 12th China Int'l Integrated Housing Industry & Building Industrialization Expo, the summit will extend to the entire industry chain of steel, wood, and concrete.

Focusing on high-rise buildings, the activity will invite industry representatives from the US, Britain, Germany, Japan, China, France, Canada, Singapore, Denmark, Sweden, etc. The delegates of government authorities, associations, architectural design and construction companies, real estate, and so on will be brought together to communicate up-to-date information, which will promote technical exchanges and cooperation between the parties.

Given this, the organizing committee sincerely invites you to participate in the industry exchange event. For more information, please contact us!
